Welcome to the Green Island
Welcome to the Island of São Miguel, the largest and most populous island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Soothing natural thermal pools, scenic hikes, dramatic coastlines and volcanic landscapes wait for you in this secret nature lovers dream. After arrival, we will transfer you to your hotel and you will have the rest of the day to rest and prepare for your future adventures.
Half Day City Tour
Today we will explore the largest municipality and economic capital of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in Portugal, Ponta Delgada. For a pleasant overview, we will stroll Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, the town's harbor front promenade. We begin from its western end, which overlooks the 16 th century Forte de São Brás, a Renaissance fortress that is used today by the Portuguese navy and houses the Azores Military Museum.
Lying opposite is Praça 5 de Outubro on which Convento e Capela de Nossa Senhora da Esperança is located, and the scene of much celebration during the annual Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. Continuing on, you'll notice on your left the familiar three arches of the original 18th-century city gates standing resplendent on Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral and captured countless times by cameras and smart phones.
Full Day Sete Cidades
Today you will explore the western part of the island, stopping first at the pineapple plantations to observe how this tropical fruit grows on these islands in the middle of the Atlantic. Take the opportunity to indulge in a pineapple liqueur tasting.
On the way to Sete Cidades, a village known for its tales and beauty you will have the opportunity to take in the breathtaking view of the main lake, also known as, Blue and Green Lakes with a stop at Vista do Rei (Kings view). You will enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant.
Half Day Lagoa do Fogo
Today you will take a half day tour to Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire), making stops in Ribeira Grande where you will visit a local liquor factory. As you make your way up to the top of the lake of fire you will stop at the luscious Caldeira Velha walking through the nature park to the hot springs! Remember to bring your swimsuit if you want to take a dip in its warm pools that have been visited for years for it’s believed medicinal value. At the top of Lagoa do Fogo you
are able to see both the North and South coasts of São Miguel and the city of Ponta Delgada.
The afternoon will be at your leisure. (Park Entrance included)
Full Day Furnas
Today’s journey begins with the beautiful seaside town of Vila Franca do Campo, the island’s governmental town in the XV century. Enjoy a taste of the famous Queijadas da Vila, a traditional pastry developed by nuns during the XVI century, before making your way to Furnas Lake.
Upon arrival to Furnas lake you will be astonished with the contrast of the peacefulness scenario with the hectic pulsing of the volcanic fumaroles. You will then head to a local restaurant where you will enjoy a traditional Cozido das Furnas (a meal cooked in sealed pots using the islands hot springs known as fumarolas) and have the
chance to indulge in the famous cozido.
The day will end with a visit to the Gorreana Tea Factory, where you will learn about the island’s tea industry and the tea production, still operated by 19th century machinery. Enjoy a tasting of the famous green and black tea while admiring the lush plantations and dramatic coastlines.
Enjoy the day to take a stroll in the city of Ponta Delgada and do some shopping, or perhaps take a half-day hiking/walking tour or even a whale watching tour from your hotel. Check out our add on activities and tours for more information.
Our final morning in the Azores will be at leisure, before making your way to the airport for the return flight home. We bid adeus to the beautiful Island of São Miguel and hope that on the flight back you reminisce of the good times that you had on the trip.
