The beautiful Azulejo tiles that you see in Lisbon and around Portugal are the result of centuries old techniques and history. Azulejos date as far back as the 13th century, when the Moors invaded the land that now belongs to Spain and Portugal.
In this tour you will visit the beautiful Azeitão region. Here, you will learn the history of the tiles as well as the the centuries old techniques that are still used today to replicate the art. Once you finish learning about it, you will paint your own tile. Once you are done, it will be baked and sent to your hotel in Lisbon or should you wish, back home (cost of shipping not included).
After a fun morning you will be taken somewhere close for lunch (not included). After lunch you will return to Lisbon and will admire some of the most magnificent tile artwork in the city. Prepare to visit the Madre de Deus Convent, which dates back to the 15th century and is the home to the Azulejo Museum. Here you will be able to admire the stunning and breathtaking interior of the church and its Baroque elements. The museum features a vast collection of tiles from the 15th century to contemporary artists. It includes the most important international schools, as the Spanish and Dutch, among others. End the visit seeing some iconic pieces from Portuguese masters such as Bordalo Pinheiro, Raúl Lino, and Maria Keil, among others.
