The Douro River roughly translates from Portuguese as "river of gold." When the setting sun catches it right, you can see its water gleam like liquid bullion bars. It is the highest-flow river of the Iberian Peninsula. It rises near Duruelo de la Sierra in Central Spain then flows into northern Portugal, to its mouth at Porto, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The cultural landscape of the Douro is listed as a World Heritage site, notable for the creation and production of a mildly fortified wine: port, grapes, conventional wines and other agricultural produce.
Travel through Portugal’s magnificent Golden River Valley, flowing past cozy Quintas, charming villages, sun-drenched vineyards and fertile farmland.
