November 10- Porto Douro Valley
Today we head to the UNESCO world heritage site of the Douro Valley, famous for the river and the vineyards that grow there. We start by heading towards the old city of Lamego, a city dating back to the Vistgoths and Romans with its medieval castle we visit the city center as well as the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, a beautifully built shrine with baroque style staircase. We make our way to the town of Pinhao, a quaint little town on the Douro river, surrounded by wine estates. Where we will have lunch. Following lunch we take a relaxing river cruise, viewing the Douro valley from different viewpoint. From Pinhao we make our way back to Porto, but stopping at a local quinta (wine estate) where we will get to see how the wine produced and the way they shipped the wine to the cellars in Porto. Of course we get to sample some of the famous Douro wines before heading back to Porto. We meet at a local restaurant at night for dinner. (B, L, D) (Accompanied by local guide)
November 11- Porto
After meeting for breakfast we take a city tour of Porto, visiting the main points of the city such as the Bolhao Market (Main market will be closed for renovation in 2018-2109) Majestic Café, Palacio da Bolsa (19th century stock exchange, the Sao Bento train station and finally a visit to the Porto wine cellars, before heading for lunch. The rest of the day is at your leisure after lunch. (B,L)
November 12: Porto-Aveiro-Lisbon
In the morning we say goodbye to Porto and head towards the city of Lisbon. We make our first stop in the Venice of Portugal in Aveiro. After visiting the city we take a ride on the moliceiro, (gondola) traveling on the local canals of Aveiro. We then head towards Mealhada in the Bairrada region for a lunch of wine and leitao of Bairrada. One of Portugals most famous dishes, leitao is suckling pig served with Portuguese style chips, and the wine in the region is a refreshing rose. We then make our way to Fatima. Pilgrims have been visiting the site for years, after the Virgin Mary appeared before three little shepherds. We finally enter the city of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. After checking in at our hotel, we meet up for dinner in the evening. (B,L,D) (Accompanied by local guide)
November 13 – Lisbon-Sintra
Today you will have a full day tour, exploring Estoril coast and Cascais, visiting Guincho beach and Cabo da Roca, Europe’s most western point, and finally stopping at the National Palace of Sintra. You will also see the Sintra- Cascais Natural Park. During your tour you will stop at a restaurant for lunch. (B, L) (Mueseum entrances are included, Accompanied by local guide).
November 14: Lisbon
After breakfast we meet in the morning for a city tour of the capital city of Portugal. The tour begins in the Belem area where you will visit the Belem tower, the ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. Your next visit is to the Jeronimos Monastary, where the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama is laid to rest, and a final visit to the Coaches Museum, where you will be able to see the horse drawn carriages from the Royal House of Portugal. . You will be able to sample the pasteis de belem, a Portuguese pastries. The tour then continues onto the Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest quarter, where fado music is heard at night, before we return to the hotel. (Mueseum entrances are included, Accompanied by local guide). (B)
November 15: Lisbon
Today is a free day to enjoy your last day in Portugal, relax at the hotel, or consider taking an optional tour of the city. In the evening we will meet and be brought to a fado house for dinner. Fado is Portugal music traditionally sung acoustically with two guitars. Before making our way home for the night.(B, D) (Accompanied by local guide at night)
November 16: Lisbon-Boston
After breakfast you will be transferred back to the airport for your connecting flight back to Boston. (B)
